Pourtant, ses principes et pratiques remettent parfois en question des croyances profond\u00e9ment ancr\u00e9es chez les acteurs de la production industrielle, notamment l&rsquo;id\u00e9e des changements de s\u00e9rie. \u202f \n\n \n<\/p><p>\nL&rsquo;approche industrielle classique dans la <strong>production manufacturi\u00e8re<\/strong> se concentre sur la r\u00e9duction des co\u00fbts unitaires gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 de grandes campagnes de production et \u00e0 des lots de grande taille. Pour ce faire, elle cherche particuli\u00e8rement \u00e0 minimiser la fr\u00e9quence des changements en investissant dans des lignes de production sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es et en promouvant la production de masse.<\/p><p> \n\nLa pens\u00e9e Lean, avec sa perspective de production all\u00e9g\u00e9e et centr\u00e9e sur le client, encourage l\u2019ajustement de la production \u00e0 la demande r\u00e9elle. Pour surmonter ces d\u00e9fis, la direction a d\u00e9cid\u00e9 que l&rsquo;entreprise devait se concentrer sur l&rsquo;am\u00e9lioration de la qualit\u00e9, tout en diversifiant son offre de produits et en r\u00e9duisant les co\u00fbts.<\/p> \n\n<p>Dans ce contexte, Toyota a invers\u00e9 la logique g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement accept\u00e9e par les fabricants : pour atteindre ses objectifs, l&rsquo;entreprise devait r\u00e9duire la taille des s\u00e9ries et augmenter la flexibilit\u00e9 des lignes de production.<\/p> \n\n<p>L&rsquo;investissement co\u00fbteux dans des lignes de production sp\u00e9cialis\u00e9es et la production de masse visant \u00e0 maximiser l&rsquo;utilisation des op\u00e9rateurs et des machines se sont av\u00e9r\u00e9s non seulement trop co\u00fbteux pour Toyota, mais \u00e9galement per\u00e7us comme une source d&rsquo;inefficacit\u00e9 et de gaspillage (muda).<\/p> \n<p>\nLa m\u00e9thode de production de masse peut entra\u00eener des retards dans la d\u00e9tection des d\u00e9fauts, tandis que Toyota cherche \u00e0 int\u00e9grer le contr\u00f4le qualit\u00e9 directement dans les op\u00e9rations de production. Les erreurs de pr\u00e9vision sur les cycles de vente peuvent provoquer des goulots d&rsquo;\u00e9tranglement, conduisant \u00e0 une accumulation de stocks inutiles, l&rsquo;un des principaux gaspillages selon la pens\u00e9e Lean.<\/p> \n\n<p>Toyota, en particulier son ing\u00e9nieur japonais Shigeo Shingo, conscient des co\u00fbts g\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9s par les changements sur les lignes de production, a d\u00e9velopp\u00e9 le SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die, qui peut \u00eatre traduit par \u00ab\u00a0changement d&rsquo;outils en un minimum de temps\u00a0\u00bb) pour r\u00e9pondre \u00e0 ces exigences de flexibilit\u00e9 des lignes de production \u00e0 moindre co\u00fbt. <\/p>\n<p>\nL&rsquo;id\u00e9e est d&rsquo;analyser soigneusement les op\u00e9rations de changement afin de les optimiser. Pour cela, on distingue les activit\u00e9s de changement pouvant \u00eatre effectu\u00e9es lorsque l&rsquo;\u00e9quipement est en marche (t\u00e2ches externes) de celles n\u00e9cessitant l&rsquo;arr\u00eat de la machine (t\u00e2ches internes).
